Certificate III in Carpentry

COURSE OVERVIEW

The Certificate III in Carpentry is designed for individuals who want to build a rewarding career inAustralia’s construction industry. This nationally recognised qualification equips students with the practical skills, technical knowledge, and industry experience required to undertake a wide range of carpentry tasks across residential and commercial construction projects.

Throughout the course, students develop essential trade skills including interpreting construction plans, using carpentry tools and equipment, constructing flooring systems, wall and ceiling frames, pitched roofs, formwork, staircases, external cladding, windows and doors, and carrying out construction measurements and levelling procedures. Students also develop a strong understanding of workplace health and safety, sustainable work practices, and risk management within construction environments.

Training combines classroom learning with extensive hands-on practical workshops in a simulated construction environment, enabling students to gain confidence using industry-standard tools, equipment, and materials. By the end of the course, graduates will have developed the practical competencies required to work safely, efficiently, and to Australian industry standards.

COURSE ENTRY REQUIREMENT

Age Requirements:

All international students must be 18 years of age to apply.

English Language Requirement:

Note: Results older than two years are not acceptable (for offshore applicants)

2. Evidence that they have studied in English for at least five years in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, United Kingdom or United States
OR
3. Evidence that, within two years of their application date, they have successfully completed in Australia a foundation course or a senior secondary certificate of education or successfully completed substantial components (50% or more units according to the training package) Certificate II or higher level qualification, from the Australian Qualifications Framework on a student visa.
OR
4. Applicants originating from students visa assessment levels 1 and 2 countries without the required IELTS or equivalent score must undertake the Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) test. Academic Requirement:

Students must have satisfactorily completed a minimum of year 12 VCE or its equivalent overseas qualifications.

LLN (Language, Literacy and Numeracy Evaluation Test):

Epoch International College will also administer Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Evaluation test to all students to ensure that they have the ability to complete the course. This test will occur prior to the course commencement and will be assessed by authorised Epoch International College’s delegate.

Onshore International Students

Complete the Pre-Training Review which aims to identify training needs through questions on previous education or training, relevance of the courses to learner and relevant experience.

Offshore International Students

Complete the Pre-Training Review which aims to identify training needs through questions on previous education or training, relevance of the courses to learner and relevant experience. This will be conducted either via video call (e.g. Skype) or phone call to the prospective learner.

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

All international students must have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the entire duration of their stay in Australia.

DURATION

Fulltime: over a period of 52 weeks

• 52 weeks of delivery is inclusive of 4 week’s; holiday breaks.
• Classroom sessions of 20 hours per week
• Training support hours include the assistance provided after the classroom session or on request by learners either via face-to-face or phone, Skype or email to support learners to undertake the learning activities and other academic matters.
• Guided learning hours are monitored by Trainers/Assessors.

• Commercial Carpenter
• Formwork Carpenter
• Framing Carpenter
• Finishing Carpenter
• Construction Tradesperson (Carpentry)
• Building Maintenance Carpenter
• Carpentry Apprentice (for eligible learners seeking an apprenticeship pathway)
• Self-employed Carpenter (subject to licensing and industry requirements)

It is not, however, intended to indicate that an individual will gain immediate employment on completion of this qualification.

Learners who successfully complete this qualification may progress into further studies such as:

To achieve this qualification, competency must be demonstrated in:

• 34 units of competency, consisting of:
  • 27 Core Units
  • 7 Elective Units

VOLUME OF LEARNING

The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) specifies that the Volume of Learning for a Certificate III qualification is typically 1-2 years (approximately 1,200-2,400 hours).

The Volume of Learning identifies the duration of all training, assessment activities and practice opportunities, including:

• • Supervised or guided learning such as classroom training sessions, trainer-led support sessions, simulated workplace training, guided learning, and formative and summative assessments.

The Volume of Learning allocated in the design of this qualification may vary depending upon, but is not limited to:

• • Existing skills, knowledge and experience of the learner
  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

The delivery hours allocated for each unit align with the Victorian Purchasing Guides and have been determined through industry consultation and trainer meetings to ensure appropriate training outcomes.

UNIQUE STUDENT IDENTIFIER

Students are required to obtain a Unique Student Identifier (USI) prior to commencing their course. The USI provides students with the ability to obtain a complete record of their Vocational Education and Training records from a single online.

Epoch International College will not issue a Certificate or Statement of Attainment to a student who does not have a USI unless they fall under the USI exemptions.

You can obtain a USI from www.usi.gov.au, or Epoch International College can obtain it on your behalf once you complete a USI application during enrolment.

Offshore international students studying outside Australia are exempt from having a USI.

IDENTIFICATION OF STUDENT NEEDS AND STUDENT SUPPORT

Student needs are identified during enrolment through the application process, Pre-Training Review and LLND assessment.
Every student is interviewed either face-to-face or over the telephone to determine their existing knowledge, skills, employment background and suitability for the qualification.
Where language, literacy, numeracy or digital literacy support is required, additional assistance may be provided.
Reasonable adjustments to training and assessment, including additional learning support, alternative assessment methods, assistive technology and flexible delivery arrangements, are available for eligible students to support successful completion of the qualification.

RPL/CREDIT TRANSFER

Students with prior learning, work experience or previous qualifications may apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Credit Transfer (CT).
